Project Summary

Microscopy images made visible at a conference

For EMC 2024 in Copenhagen, Delong Instruments wanted conference pieces that would connect directly to their work: electron microscopy, imaging, and the visual world revealed by their instruments.

SciCanvas created a small set of wearable pieces based on images acquired with Delong Instruments microscopes. The result included bow ties used as booth giveaways, and a custom outfit: a top and skirt worn by a member of the Delong marketing team during the conference.

Conference pieces were developed from the company's own visual world: electron microscopy images, scale, contrast, and structure.

Client Context

A visual world already present in the company's work

Delong Instruments is a Brno-based company developing electron microscopy and electron-optical technologies. Their instruments make micro- and nanoscale structures visible: not only as scientific data, but also as striking visual material.

For an international microscopy conference, this visual world was already present in the company's own work. The task was to translate it into pieces people could notice, wear, remember, and take home.

Source Images

Real micrographs as source images

The starting point was a set of scientific images acquired with Delong Instruments microscopes.

Instead of treating the images as decoration, SciCanvas approached them as source images: looking for rhythm, contrast, scale, density, and pattern logic already present in the micrographs.

Design Translation

Different formats, different scales

The designs were developed to work across two very different formats.

For the bow ties, the pattern needed to be readable at a small scale, with enough contrast to be recognizable from a distance but not too visually noisy when worn.

For the outfit, the image could become more immersive. The skirt allowed the microscopy-derived pattern to unfold across a larger surface, while the top created a coordinated but wearable conference look.

The same visual source was adapted for small giveaway pieces and a full conference outfit.

Final Pieces

Conference pieces grounded in microscopy

The final set included custom bow ties for booth giveaways and a coordinated top and skirt for the Delong representative at EMC 2024. Together, the pieces worked as conversation starters, linking the conference booth, the company's technology, and the visual beauty of microscopy in a form people could immediately understand.

Why It Worked

Three layers in one conference piece

This project connected scientific source, company identity, and conference presence at the same time.

Scientific source

The pattern came from real microscopy images, not generic science-inspired graphics.

Company identity

The visual material was directly connected to Delong Instruments' own technology and field.

Conference presence

The pieces gave the booth and representatives a memorable, human, and tactile visual element.

For SciCanvas, this was a clear example of how scientific images can become meaningful conference pieces: wearable, recognizable, and grounded in the client's actual work.

Next Step
